Common Things

April 2, 2014

This book is an entry in the William Stafford Calligraphy Project and also the first in what I hope to be a series of small books that present two poems together. When I read Stafford’s “Allegiances,” I couldn’t help being reminded of Joachim du Bellay’s famous sonnet “Heureux qui, comme Ulysse.” Presenting the two poems interwoven in different hands and colors has an interesting effect, and the combination of lovely papers gives me great pleasure.

The book (along with many fabulous pieces by other members of the Portland Society for Calligraphy) will be on display at three different locations this year.

I completed my second handmade book for the calligraphy classes I’m taking. This time the script is italic, and I used watercolors on wave green Canson Mi-Teintes paper. Click on the image below to see more photos.

For a class project we made a book using the text of our choice. I chose Gerard Manley Hopkins’s “Spring and Fall” and wrote it in humanist bookhand on cream-colored Frankfurt paper. The lines, written in watercolor, change color gradually as the poem progresses. The leafy paper I used for the endpapers is the background in this photo.

Performing Arts Series brochure 2009–2010

August 24, 2009

For this season’s concert series, I featured a striking image of one of the church sanctuary lamps on the cover and had the mailer printed on felt paper rather than the usual smooth glossy stock. I got a lot of positive feedback about this one.

If you look at the concert posters for this season, you will see how the elements of this brochure were subtly incorporated to suit a variety of concerts.
