Common Things

April 2, 2014

This book is an entry in the William Stafford Calligraphy Project and also the first in what I hope to be a series of small books that present two poems together. When I read Stafford’s “Allegiances,” I couldn’t help being reminded of Joachim du Bellay’s famous sonnet “Heureux qui, comme Ulysse.” Presenting the two poems interwoven in different hands and colors has an interesting effect, and the combination of lovely papers gives me great pleasure.

The book (along with many fabulous pieces by other members of the Portland Society for Calligraphy) will be on display at three different locations this year.

Calendar

This calligraphy class project was a calendar featuring photos of one adorable four-month-old baby. The paper is Arches text wove sponged with Elmer’s art paste and acrylic paint. The dates are written in gouache, and I got the 8×8″ photo prints at Costco. I wish I had photos of more of the pages, because there is a fabulous array of colors.

Calligraphy book

For a class project we made a book using the text of our choice. I chose Gerard Manley Hopkins’s “Spring and Fall” and wrote it in humanist bookhand on cream-colored Frankfurt paper. The lines, written in watercolor, change color gradually as the poem progresses. The leafy paper I used for the endpapers is the background in this photo.
