Chalkboard lettering

Some of you may not know that Studio Byrd offers chalkboard lettering among its many services. The freedom and liveliness of this medium are greatly satisfying to me.

Common Things

April 2, 2014

This book is an entry in the William Stafford Calligraphy Project and also the first in what I hope to be a series of small books that present two poems together. When I read Stafford’s “Allegiances,” I couldn’t help being reminded of Joachim du Bellay’s famous sonnet “Heureux qui, comme Ulysse.” Presenting the two poems interwoven in different hands and colors has an interesting effect, and the combination of lovely papers gives me great pleasure.

The book (along with many fabulous pieces by other members of the Portland Society for Calligraphy) will be on display at three different locations this year.

Ulysses excerpt

July 27, 2013

My entry in the Portland Society for Calligraphy’s fall 2013 member show featured an excerpt from the Cyclops chapter of Ulysses. I once saw these words on a gigantic two- or three-story-high banner in Dublin on Bloomsday, probably as publicity for a local grocery store, and the pungent, tangible list of vegetables has stuck with me for many years. I wanted my piece to have a similarly visceral effect on a smaller scale, so I framed it with some food-related objects.

Calligraphy book: The Yellow Tractor

April 12, 2013

This calligraphy project displays an excerpt of a book written from the viewpoint of a Haitian boy. He is interested in the world outside Haiti, but he is also proud of his small town and wishes for it to be recognized in the world. I wanted to make a book that was colorful and intriguing, simple and poignant. The body text is an attempted imitation of European school handwriting, and I pasted maps to the backs of the pages before painting them.

Exultate justi

March 4, 2013

Full of admiration for the scribes of the Book of Kells, I spent some time learning the Insular Majuscule, or Half-Uncial, hand and found it immensely enjoyable.

Broadside

January 8, 2013

This work is a commission based on Job 38:4. The client chose a short verse, but I wanted to include some of the delightful language from the surrounding chapters about the mysteries of the sea, the wind, and the creatures of the earth. The flowing lines of poetry grew from an early concept that involved geological layers—the foundation of the earth.

Letterpress Christmas cards

December 25, 2012

I took a letterpress class, and for the final project I printed our family Christmas cards using my own calligraphic image on a variety of papers. The tree background was printed with a handmade photopolymer plate. To print the second color, I traced my own calligraphy in Illustrator to create a digital vector file and ordered the plate from Boxcar Press. It was helpful to learn the letterpress process firsthand, and I was very pleased with the cards, but I’m not sure how much chance I will have to personally print letterpress projects in the future.
